Abscesses

Develop your knowledge and understanding of abscesses in guinea pigs. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Guinea pig skin conditions course bundle.

This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and outcomes of abscesses in guinea pigs:

Cause – a local collection of liquid inflammatory products consisting of leukocytes, liquor puris, and liquefied tissues enclosed in a fibrous capsule.
Signs – dependent on where the abscess is located.
Diagnosis – history and oral/physical examination, CBC, chemistries, imaging, bacterial culture, and sensitivity.
Treatment – analgesia, fluid therapy, and parenteral vitamin C initially. Drain/reduce/resect/remove abscess. Correct dental occlusion. Antimicrobial therapy.
