Develop your knowledge and understanding of acariasis in guinea pigs, an infestation with Trixacarus caviae and Chirodiscoides caviae mites. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Guinea pig skin conditions course bundle.
This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of acariasis in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – Trixacarus caviae, Chirodiscoides caviae.
Signs – alopecia, crusting, pruritus.
Diagnosis – skin scraping but may miss Trixacarus; Chirodiscoides usually detected readily. Deep scraping or biopsy sometimes needed for Trixacarus.
Treatment – ivermectin, selamectin, pyrethroid flea powder dusts.
Prognosis – good if treated.
